Self-affirmations can be a great tool for building confidence and cultivating more self-love. When you speak about yourself positively in the present tense in a consistent manner, it begins to become your normal narrative.

So many of us suffer from low self-worth because our inner voice is a bully, constantly reminding us of our perceived faults. Self-affirmations help you to push back against your inner bully and focus on uplifting self-talk. There have been several studies done on the actual effects of using self-affirmations. A study done by University of Pennsylvania  researchers proved actual physical changes happened in the brain of the brain responsible for self-processing helping them to maintain a positive view of themselves by focusing on their source of self-worth and core values. (if you’re unsure what your core values are, read my post on how to find your core values) Another Study proved how using self-affirmations motivates people to make healthier choices for themselves. You start to take better care of yourself just by using self-affirmations.

I have my own personal experience with this. I’ve never been consistent with working out even though I know it’s good for me. I started using the affirmation “I love my body and I take care of my body”. I would say this to myself several times before working out. And now I’ve been able to stick to a three-times a week workout schedule for almost 6 months! This is my longest streak ever. And by working out more, I have started to feel better about myself which has also helped me build more self-confidence.

Now it’s your turn. Choose any of the self-affirmations below and incorporate them into your daily life. There are several ways to do this, and I will list them all at the end of this post.

How to use Your Self-Affirmations:

Self-affirmations become more powerful when we are consistently faced in front of them especially when we are struggling with our own self-worth. Here are my favorite ways to incorporate my affirmations into my daily life.

1. Write them down daily. At least once a day write down your affirmation with pen and paper. Bonus points if you take your time and add a little flare to it.

2. Say them out loud to yourself in the mirror every morning. Make eye contact with yourself and try to be strong when you say them. It might feel a little awkward at first, but with time it becomes more comfortable.

3. Say them out loud or in your head every time you start to slip back into your old habit of self-doubt.

4. Meditate with them. This is my personal favorite. I meditate with my affirmations every morning for at least 15 minutes. I repeat my affirmation in my head with each long inhale and exhale. If I have a few affirmations I want to work with then I will cycle through them during my meditation. This also helps me to stay mindful instead of tuning out from repeating the same phrase numerous times.

5. Place them somewhere you will see every day like the dash of your car, your bathroom mirror, your water bottle. This helps to serve as a little reminder throughout your day.

6. Visualize your affirmations as if they are already your current reality. Visualize yourself as already being confident, brave, capable, powerful. Picture it with details, like where are you? How do you stand? What is your facial expression? What are the sights, sounds, and smells around you? Make it as real and clear as possible.

7. Turn your affirmation into your phone background. We’re all guilty of looking at our phones throughout the day so we might as well use this habit to our advantage. Create a phone background with a photo you love and add your affirmation text to it. I currently use a sunshining mountain scene with my affirmation for my phone background.

However, you want to incorporate your self-affirmation into your life is beautiful. The main thing is you want it to stay in your mind. Don’t just read it once on this blog post or Pinterest and never use it again. Allow it to sink deep within your mind and take hold. It might take a bit of time to start feeling the results, but don’t give up on it. You are worth the extra effort and time.
