We’re halfway through the year as I’m writing this blog post and it’s hard to believe it’s already June. Do you remember the goals you wanted to accomplish this year? How’s it going so far? Have you been able to check a few goals off your to do list?

Don’t beat yourself up if you’re feeling guilty while reading this. It’s okay if you haven’t been able to make progress on your goals yet.

There’s still 6 whole months left in the year!

That’s more than enough time to get your momentum going and tackle those beautiful dreams of yours.

One of the main reasons many of us don’t accomplish those big goals we set at the beginning of the year is because those once motivating goals start to feel overwhelming.

We don’t know where to start or how to get our momentum going to accomplish those goals. Then we find ourselves halfway through the year feeling like we haven’t gotten any closer to achieving our dream.

This is where quarterly goals come in.

There’s still plenty of time to still set quarterly goals even if you didn’t do that at the beginning of the year. There are two quarters left after all.

I used to always make a long list of goals on January 1st every year. But a few months into the year, I would start to feel discouraged. It never seemed like I was doing enough to get closer to my checking those goals off.

Without the rush of the New Year, I felt defeated and unmotivated.

I’d look at my big list of goals and sigh. But then I discovered setting quarterly goals and my goal setting game changed.

So don’t throw out your long list of goals you made at the beginning of the year. We will need it for this confidence building and goal setting exercise.

How to Break Down Your Goals into Quarters to Get Closer to Achieving Them

Step 1: Yearly Goal Setting

Pull out that list you made in January of all the things you wanted to accomplish this year. Read over it and see if they still align with what you want to achieve.

Now whether you have that list or not, we’re going to write a new list of year goals.

This new list is all about clear, specific goals that matter the most to you.

It’s perfectly okay if you only have three goals on your list or you can have as many as you want, as long as they are very specific and important to you. We don’t want to stretch ourselves too thin. We need to focus on what’s going to get us closer to living out our dream life.

For example, don’t say you want to read more books this year. Write down exactly how many books you want to read whether that number is 10 or 50.

(I personally set a reading goal for myself this year of 24 books.)

Or don’t just say you want to learn how to sew. Write what exactly you want to be able to sew by the end of the year whether that’s a quilt or a scarf. (Craftsy.com is a fantastic place to learn how to sew and a whole bunch of other crafts from cake decorating to photography.)

Now that you have your new list or a list, let’s move onto step 2.

Step 2: Quarterly Goal Planning

We still have two quarters left this year. Two 90-day periods. Let’s break our goals down into what we can accomplish in each of those 90-day periods.

Breaking our big yearly goals down into bite sized 90-day goals makes them less intimidating and more attainable. The numbers we’re striving for become smaller and less scary.

For example, remember how I said I wanted to read 24 books this year? That means I need to read 6 books per 90-day quarter. Reading only 6 books sounds way less intimidating than 24 books. But if I hadn’t already started reading, then these last two quarters of the year I would need to bump that number up to 12 books per 90-day period so I can still end the year with having read 24 books.

Now grab a new sheet of paper and write down your 90-day goals that will give you the end result of your big year goals.

For example one of your goals could be to start your own sticker business. But first you need to learn how to draw or design stickers. Everything is figureoutable (my favorite quote from Marie Forleo) and we live in a golden age where we have access to so much information. We can learn anything right from our phones or laptops.

So, in quarter 1 your goal is to learn how to draw. You sign up for Kawaii Drawing Club to learn how to draw your own kawaii stickers. (They also teach you how to turn your drawings into stickers and other merchandise)

In quarter 2 your goal is to learn how to set up a sticker business like where to sell and how to make listings, etc. You take a business class on Udemy to learn how to set up your own sticker business.

In quarter 3 your goal is to actually set up your sticker business. You implement what you’ve learned in the classes and take the steps to set up your own sticker business. You come up with your business name and you confidently know where to start selling your stickers.

In quarter 4 your goal is to make 25 sales to prove this can be a profitable, successful business for you. So, now you learn all the extra steps by signing up for a class on Udemy. You learn how to take better product photos, how to market your business, and how to research SEO. Now you’re well on your way of achieving your year goal of starting your own sticker business and making sales!

Now it’s your turn. Look at your year goals. Write down specifically what your goals are in each 90-day period that will get you closer to your big year goals.

Remember these goals need to be important to you. Don’t waste your time on goals you don’t really care about when you could be working towards your big dreams.

From now on don’t focus on your year goal. Only focus on the 90-day period in front of you and work on accomplishing your 90-day goals.

If you achieve your quarterly goals then you will achieve your yearly goals, so there’s no need to worry about them anymore.

Keep your focus on the quarter you’re in.

Step 3: Evaluate Your Quarterly Goals

Evaluate your 90-day goals at the start of every quarter to make sure they’re still aligned with the direction you want to go in.

If your yearly goals have changed, that’s completely fine. Just rewrite your quarterly goals to align with your new yearly goals.

Remember we don’t want to spend time on what’s not getting us closer to the goals that matter the most to us. You don’t have to stick to your 90-day goals if your overall dream for the year has changed. We’re human and it’s totally normal if our priorities shift or we discover something new that we really want.

With your 90-day goals that align with your dream life, get productive in achieving those goals. I love this list of productivity habits from Sofia at sundayrainday.com

Step 4: Journal about Your Quarterly Goals

At the end of every quarter write down what you did that quarter to achieve your goals.

Journal about the goals you accomplished and what steps you took to be able to accomplish them.

Also write about the goals you didn’t accomplish and explain why they didn’t happen. This isn’t to make yourself feel bad or beat yourself up. This is to get clarity on what you might need to change or shift for the next 90-day period.

Accepting where you fell short with compassion and understanding is very important in achieving your goals. You’ll never achieve your dreams if you waste time beating yourself up.

But it is helpful to identify the real cause on why you didn’t achieve your goal. Maybe you took on too much, maybe you need to break the goal down into even smaller chunks, maybe the goal is just not as important as it used to be, whatever the reason may be.

This is a no judgement and shame space. Evaluate and journal this with compassion and grace for yourself.

And give yourself a huge high-five on the goals you did accomplish!

Journal about how you feel after this quarter. Are you motivated and excited or tired and stressed? Use this to help you plan for the next 90-day period. Make adjustments where you need to.

This is your journey, so do what you need to do in order to accomplish the next set of 90-day goals.

Give this a try for at least 1 quarter and see how it feels. This just might be the thing you need to accomplish your goals and get one step closer to your dream life.

Love this post. I’m a hug fan of goal setting and I do exactly what you say in regards to breaking them down into quarterly goals too! I find the quarterly ones are big enough to push myself but not as scary as some of the yearly ones we often set for ourselves lol
