Dreamers are my favorite people. I adore people with wild dreams. They make the world a little more interesting and fun. They are constantly thinking about how their life could be even more magical and beautiful.

But sometimes dreamers are the worst about actually chasing their dreams.

Don’t feel called out because I am one of these people. I dream big, but then I get overwhelmed and insecure about where and how to start chasing those big dreams.

Many times over the years, I’ve had a huge dream, or five, and quit before I got started because it felt too impossible. All the goals to get there seemed too big and out of reach.

I’m also guilty of having too many dreams bouncing around in my head at once. This makes it difficult for me to focus on the one main dream I really want. I get distracted and my goals quickly start to crumble.

Can you relate?

If you can, don’t worry. There is a goal setting technique that works for us big, maybe a little bit distracted dreamers.

Instead of piling a ton more on your to-do list and still feeling overwhelmed by all the goal-setting you need to do to get closer to your dream, just set one tiny goal a day.

For those of us who dream big, but then fall short of actually achieving the dream, I’ve discovered that accomplishing a tiny goal every day helps me in the long run much more than focusing on huge goals.

By committing yourself to doing one small thing every day to get closer to your goal, you are releasing yourself from the pressure to set unattainable goals and then feeling discouraged when you didn’t make enough progress towards your dream.

Are you ready to learn how to commit yourself to setting and achieving one small goal every day to get closer to your dream life?

Let’s dive in!

How to Commit to Doing Only One Thing Every Day to Achieve Your Goal

Step 1: Get Clear on What Your Dream Life Looks Like

One of the main thing dreamers with wild imaginations struggle with is not having a clear enough image of our dream life.

It’s easy for us to potentially picture a lot of different versions of our life. That’s why we need to get to the core of what really matters to us.

I love this book by Jordan Lee Dooley, Embrace Your Almost. It helped me narrow down on what I really wanted out of life. I was able to let go of all the unnecessary fluff and see the crystal-clear image of what I truly wanted.

I always thought I wanted to be a famous author, but the truth is I just wanted to be able to work freely from my own home, write what I wanted to, and be my own boss so I can spend time with my animals and husband.

I was no longer ensnared in the trap of believing I needed to be a famous writer to ever make my true dream a reality.

Instead of destroying myself trying to get a book published, I started Chasing Sunday Pancakes. This blog is helping me create my dream life and honestly, it’s way more aligned with what I want out of life, freedom. (I discovered this was my biggest core value thanks to this exercise).

Now it’s your turn, get very clear and specific on what your dream life looks like.

Do you travel all the time?

Do you work at home or in a big, gorgeous office?

Are you in a small town or a bustling city?

Do you own your own bakery?

Are you a paddle boarding YouTube influencer?

Are you a history professor, podcaster, dance instructor, illustrator or content creator?

Take your time on this. Don’t rush this part because it’s one of the best things you’ll ever do for yourself to get closer to the life of your dreams.

Step 2: Choose One Main Goal to Focus On

Okay now that you know what your dream life looks like, pick the one main goal that is going to help you get there.

For me getting closer to my dream life meant starting and building Chasing Sunday Pancakes so this is the one main goal I work on.

Having only one main goal helps to prioritize your focus and your time. Instead of being pulled in ten different directions, you can confidently move forward towards the goal that is the most important to you.

Evaluate your dream life and clearly define the one main goal that is going to help you get there.

This could be earning a college degree.

Or taking a class on Udemy to help you learn and build the skills you need to get closer to your dream life. They offer classes on everything from baking to web design to meditation to digital marketing and loads more. My favorite thing is you don’t need a monthly membership. You can just purchase the class you want (Pro tip: they have incredible sales happening all the time that drops a class price of $149.99 down to sometimes as low as $15.99).

It could also be starting a business. Finding a job in a different town. Gaining more experience in a certain field. Whatever that one main goal is that will get you one step closer to your ultimate dream.

Step 3: Setting Quarterly Goals

If the one main goal you picked is going to take you a year or longer, it’s helpful to break that yearly goal down into quarterly goals.

By splitting your one main goal into quarterly goals, it makes the goal easier to digest and therefore more attainable. It’s no longer one huge goal, but four smaller goals that are less intimidating.

This will also help you figure out what your daily goals will need to be to get you closer to achieving your quarterly goal which will get you closer to achieving the main goal which will get you closer to your dream life.

Learn more on setting quarterly goals.

Look at your one main goal and break it into quarterly goals.

If your one main goal is to start your own photography business, then your first quarter goal could be learning more about photography. You can sign up for photography classes on Udemy. You can join photography groups on Facebook. You can research photography on Pinterest and read photography blogs.

Your second quarter goal could be learning how to set up a business. You can take business classes on Udemy and read small business blogs and listen to business podcasts.

Your third quarter goal could be setting up your photography business. You pick out your business name, file all the legal paperwork, invest in the equipment and software you need, set up a website.

Your fourth quarter goal could be getting paying clients. You can take a marketing class on Udemy, build an email list, take photos for free to build up a portfolio to show future paying clients.

By the end of the fourth quarter if you achieved all those quarterly goals you’ll have achieved your one big main goal of starting your own photography business.

Step 4: Break Down Quarterly Goals into Tiny Daily Goals

Here comes the fun part! Now that you’ve gotten clear on your dream life, picked a main goal to focus on, broken that main goal down into quarters, now you get to break the quarterly goals down into tiny daily goals.

Above I gave you a few examples of what you can do in each quarter to achieve your quarterly goal of starting your own photography business. Did you see how in each quarter, there wasn’t just one task to accomplish, there were several?

But you don’t need to spend whole days getting these tasks accomplished to achieve your dream life.

Instead break them down into tiny daily tasks to achieve your main goal. They can even be quick wins.

For example, for Chasing Sunday Pancakes, I don’t write a blog post every day. That would be great if I could, but I have other things going on in my life. However, I do achieve one daily goal that gets me closer to my dream life.

Some days I write a blog post. Some days I make Pinterest pins. Some days I research to find new topics to write about. Some days I email other bloggers to network. Some days I find images for the blog. Some days I search for keywords.

I do take Sundays off typically from accomplishing any tasks. I highly recommend you take one day off so you don’t burn yourself out. Even if you’re only spending five minutes a day on your daily tasks, you don’t want to start resenting the fact that you have to do it.

Pick a day in the week when you don’t have to accomplish a daily task. Have a complete pressure free day.

I don’t work all day every day on Chasing Sunday Pancakes. That just wouldn’t be sustainable. But every day I set one small goal of growing my blog and making it better so one day I can have my dream life.

Look at your quarterly goals and break them down into small daily tasks that you can confidently achieve even when you’re short on time.

Not every day needs to be a huge accomplishing day. If you do have a huge accomplishing day that’s amazing! But if all you did was write Instagram captions or scroll Pinterest for ideas, that counts.

You still dedicated time whether it was 3 hours or 10 minutes to your main goal.

Small daily tasks are about releasing you from the pressure of achieving huge goals that feel overwhelming.

But by accomplishing one daily task every day you’re still getting closer to your quarterly goal and to achieving your main goal, which will help you get to your dream life.

Small things add up over time.

But just because they’re small does not mean they’re not important. You still need to commit to these daily tasks and take them seriously.

Step 5. Hold Yourself Accountable to Your Small Daily Goals

Holding ourselves accountable is the most important step in this whole process. If we don’t hold ourselves accountable, we will struggle to achieve our dream life, and we might never even get there.

Don’t skip this step!

My favorite methods for holding myself accountable are:

  1. On my weekly planner notepad (I love this one from Amazon) at the top of each day is the small daily task I need to accomplish for my main goal. I might not do it first thing, but it’s right there at the top of the list reminding me all day long that I need to do it and check it off.
  2. At the end of each day, I journal about what daily task, or tasks if I had the time and motivation, I accomplished to get closer to my main goal. I write about how it made me feel to achieve this small goal and why it helps get me closer to accomplishing my main goal.

There are several ways to keep yourself accountable. As mentioned above you can write it down in your planner and journal about it.

But you can also:

  1. have an accountability buddy
  2. make it your phone background
  3. write it on a sticky note and put it where you’ll see it all day long
  4. give yourself a little treat when you accomplish it
  5. not let yourself have something you want until you accomplish it

Whatever you need or want to do hold yourself accountable is up to you as long as it works

Step 6. Reflect on All that You’ve Accomplished

At the end of the week or month or quarter, reflect on all the daily tasks you achieved.

Give yourself a huge high-five for accomplishing so many tasks that got you closer to achieving your main goal!

Be proud of yourself for all the work you did and feel good about you got yourself one step closer to living your dream life!

Give this goal setting method a try for at least a few weeks to see if it works for you. Let me know how it goes for you by leaving a comment or emailing me from the Contact page.

  1. Random Little Thoughts

This hit home for me. I tend to get overwhelmed trying to think of ALL the things I want to do or achieve at once, and then end up doing nothing. Focusing on just one small step a day feels doable and powerful. Thanks for the reminder that progress doesn’t have to be flashy – it just has to be consistent.
